Clare

The next morning Clare made an appointment to meet an attorney. She’d find out if she should be worried about Jim taking Kayla from her. She knew he’d do it just to get back at her.

Entering the front door, she saw two elevators on the right side next to a door that led to the stairs. On the wall by the elevators hung a map behind a sheet of framed glass, which outlined all the rooms with the names of the people who occupied them.

She spotted his name, Attorney Kirk Gabble: Room 314A. Stepping towards the elevators, she pushed the up button and waited. The elevator dinged as it came to a halt. She entered and pushed the button for the third floor. Her stomach tightened and her hands trembled as she waited in the office for the attorney to call her in. She wasn’t sure if she could go through with the meeting, but she knew she had to find out what it would cost for a divorce and what she could do to protect Kayla and her.

She had three attorneys to choose from, but she went with the one that publicized a free consultation. She glanced up every few seconds while flipping through a magazine.

“Clare Culback,” the receptionist said. “He can see you now.”

After tossing the magazine on the table in front of her, she stood and followed the young woman with black curly hair. Walking into the consultation room, she saw he had a few diplomas on the wall. On his desk sat several picture frames, which she assumed were of his family, and mounds of manila folders with people’s names listed on them.

She pulled the chair out and took a seat, setting her purse in her lap.

“So, what brings you in today, Mrs. Culback?” Attorney Gabble asked. His thin brown hair accentuated his blue eyes and freckled face. He didn’t look much older than thirty.

She cleared her throat. “I’m here because my husband asked for a divorce.”

“How do you feel about him wanting a divorce?”

“I know why he wants one, but I’m afraid.”

“What scares you, Mrs. Culback? Did he do or say anything threatening?”

“He’s said that if I ever leave him, he’ll make it so I don’t see our daughter again. I know he is seeing someone else too.”

“Do you have proof of that?”

“Only what he has told me and the way he has been acting lately.”

“How many children do you have?”

“One.”

“Do you own anything, like a house or cars?”

“We rent and the car is in my name but the truck is in his. The only other possession we have is the furniture in our condo. There are no big bank accounts or anything worth fighting over.”

“I see. It will be pretty easy then.”

Clearing her throat again before answering, “What about my daughter?”

“First, I want you to tell me about your husband. What is he like as a father and a husband?”

“He doesn’t spend much time with her, if that’s what you’re asking. As a husband, well, he’s…he’s a drunk.
